Founded in 1899 as the world's first museum for kids,

Housed in a historic 60,000 square feet, 1936 subway station, the New York Transit Museum is the largest museum of public transportation history in the United States. Our comprehensive collection includes more than 6,000 objects and 250,000 archival materials tracing the cultural, social, and technological history of public transportation in the New York metropolitan region. On view are permanent and changing exhibitions, interactive displays, 20 vintage subway and elevated cars and a working signal tower. In addition to exhibits, programs include: guided tours, lectures, films and age-appropriate children’s workshops. Museum store with wide range of transit related products and books on premises.

Take a ride back in time on a one-of-a-kind Carousel featuring 51 magnificently carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer and two dragon-pulled chariots. Carved in 1912 by Charles Carmel, one of the foremost carousel designers of the time, this fully restored classic has an original Wurlitzer band organ and offers a fast and breezy ride. Located in the Park’s Children’s Corner, come and take a spin - it’s the perfect accompaniment to a day of fun in Prospect Park for kids of all ages.

A trip to Prospect Park would be not be complete without a lakeside picnic surrounded by the glistening Lake of Brooklyn’s urban oasis. The Lakeside Snack Bar is conveniently located next to the Park’s Pedal Boat dock and interpretive Nature Trail System. Complement a picnic lunch with a pedal boat rental for up to four people ($15 for one hour with refundable $10 deposit). A fun and affordable way to soak up some rays and get back to nature.

Weeksville Heritage Center brings African American history to life! Its historic Hunterfly Road Houses are the only surviving residential structures of Weeksville, a vibrant, self-sufficient 19th century African American community. Tour the newly-restored houses, which are listed on the National Historic Register, or attend Weeksville Heritage Center’s education, preservation, music, lectures, walking tours and other programs for all ages. There’s a lot to discover about how African Americans lived in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
